IT for Change has been working in the area of ICTs and education, at the levels of research, capacity building and pilot programme. Based on our work, this note exposes ways in which ICTs could be used as an integral part of the education system and its processes to promote teacher professional development. The digital medium has the capacity to allow local knowledge construction while equally supporting text, audio and video modes. Hence its potential for revolutionising teaching learning needs to be explored. However, in order to be successful, this exploration needs to be firmly grounded in both educational aims/philosophies and in educational contexts, as well as anchored by educationists.
Huge investments over the last decade in ICTs in education have failed largely because they have been driven by technologists without such understanding. The Karnataka education system must thus support the creation of the 'digital culture of learning' amongst teachers and teacher educators through appropriate policy and programme.
