Aparna Kalley

Project Coordinator

Aparna kalleyAparna K, is an MA, Sociology graduate with over four years of experience in the development sector. Organisations like Samuha and Hengasara Hakkina Sangha in Karnataka, and Timbaktu Collective in Andhra Pradesh have contributed to Aparna’s experience.

As a trainer, Aparna has handled diverse issues like dowry, sexual harassment, domestic violence, sexuality, gender and equity, police, Mutually Aided Cooperative Thrift Societies (MACTS), Panchayat Raj etc. Working as a trainer along with an associate for a UNICEF implemented ‘Community Monitoring Programme’, she has both given training and prepared training modules on active community monitoring of ICDS, Schools and Primary Health centres. She has also been involved in documentation and data analysis of the projects that she has worked on. At Samuha, Aparna worked as Coordinator for Adolescent Research Programme in collaboration with University of California, San Francisco. The team aided in testing the hypothesis “Economic independence gives adolescents more control over their bodies”.

In her student days, Aparna was an active member of an organization called Jana mana that used theatre as a medium to bring about awareness on social issues. Besides participating in various theatre festivals and symposiums she has acted in various street plays and stage productions.

Chinmayi Arakali

ChinmayiChinmayi has been with the Mahiti Manthana (MM) project of IT for Change (ITfC) since its start in 2005, working mostly with the video component. In the past three years, she has guided and been part of the video team in Mysore that has produced eleven videos meant for the rural sangha women that the project works with.

Chinmayi has completed her Postgraduate Diploma Program in Film and Video Communication Design at the National Institute of Design (NID). She made her diploma film as part of the MM project of ITfC and Mahila Samakhya Karnataka. A documentary about four children – their views on boys and girls, on life and their aspirations and how social conditioning already shapes gender roles at such an early age. As part of her training at NID, she has scripted and directed “ Ek thi Khidki”, a short fiction film about a young woman’s search for her lost childhood window; “Living to tell a tale” , a documentary film about a puppeteer and the tales his puppets have to tell; and two public service advertisements that seek to promote cycling.


Chinmayi graduated (Bachelor of arts) in Journalism, English and Economics from the University of Mysore and then pursued Masters in English literature at the University of Mysore for a year.

Her special interests are Social communication, Gender and Participatory media. Chinmayi is also interested in dance and bird watching.

Krupa Thimmaiah

KrupaKrupa has worked with India – Canada Collaborative HIV/AIDS Project (ICHAP) and Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) as Programme Officer, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) from 2003 to 2004. Her work included communications training for field staff – on behaviour change communication, street play training with the community, participatory workshops for sex workers to facilitate expression of their experiences through visuals, production and development of communications materials, adaptation of existing materials and development of discussion guides for films. Krupa has seen a number of materials through from design to production.

She did her Diploma Course in Communication Design (1998 - 2003) from Srishti, School of Art, Design and Technology. During her student days she volunteered for Akshara Foundation, developing visual interfaces for educational games and was part of a team that produced ‘Silent Spaces’ a film on sexuality for urban youth. Her interests include Contemporary Dance and Kalaripayatu.

Rajesh D. Hanbal

Programme Associate

RajeshRajesh has an M.A. in Public Administration from IGNOU, New Delhi. Previous to that he studied Computer Science & Engineering, at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore. He began his career with Mindtree Ltd, a software consulting firm, but made the shift to teaching shortly thereafter. He was a faculty member at SJCE, Mysore and has volunteered at many levels with Kaliyuva Mane, an alternative school for opportunity deprived children, run by Divyadeepa Trust on the outskirts of Mysore. He has also mentored a few civil service aspirants in his free time. Rajesh is passionate about FOSS and has been involved in imparting trainings at different levels including one for  District Institute of Education and  Training(DIET), Govt. Of Karnataka. He enjoys cooking, hiking and teaching children in his free time.
