IT for Change (ITfC) is a non-profit organisation working in the area of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for social change. We are involved in action research, policy advocacy and field-based development process innovations involving ICTs. ITfC's research and advocacy work aims to influence the information society discourse and policy spaces at global, national and local levels, seeking to build cutting edge theoretical concepts and policy responses from a pro-South standpoint.

Project Associate - IT
Location: Bangalore, India

 

IT for Change is looking for individuals who are willing to commit their technical skills to the process of social change and keen to work in the development sector. The candidate should be able to adjust to the special circumstances of NGO work, and derive satisfaction and fulfilment in being associated with social and development work.
Candidate will be required to support the work of the organization by providing in-house technical support as well as provide application implementation and support for our project partners. The position will assume overall responsibility for technology support and management. ITfC combines a challenging, dynamic work environment and excellent professional development opportunities.

Job Profile:

  • Manage a small team of Technology Support specialists and serve as coach and mentor.
  • Manage and troubleshoot in areas of IT infrastructure and network (GNU/Linux LAN)
  • Research, implement or modify internal systems as necessary to meet quality work environment.
  • Track, monitor and maintain technical requirements and resources, including procurement of new systems, hardware and software
  • Recommend and implement processes to ensure consistent usage and security of IT systems.
  • Oversee IT Support for workshops, and for other public organizations that ITfC works with
  • Explore new developments in Free Software and experiment with adopting different free software applications within the organisation and at partner's locations in existing and new areas.

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 3 years of work covering information systems and support experience required.
  • In-depth knowledge of computer operating systems and commonly used applications.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and tools
  • Ability to interact with cross-functional teams.
  • Problem solving skills and experience
  • Ability to trouble shoot an issue in an effective manner.

Education or Formal Training:

  • Bachelor of Engineering or Science in Computer Science or related field
  • Exposure to GNU/Linux operating system preferred.
  • Willingness to work in the development sector

Technical Associate - CAD
Location: Bangalore, India

 

This is a part-time position and IT for Change is looking for experts, or people who have used Computer Aided Design (CAD) applications, who are looking at a career in teaching and training.

The ideal candidate will be one willing to use his/ her technical skills for social change and keen to work in the development sector. The candidate will explore the various Free and Open Source Software alternative to CAD tools and applications and develop training modules and materials for higher education faculty. We believe there are excellent opportunities for establishing training institutes in FOSS CAD tools, since these are good and can be freely used without needing to pay huge license fees.

Job Profile:

  • Candidate should be proficient in using one of more of the 2D and 3D CAD tools - Autocad, Qcad (Free and Open Source Software), 3D Max, Maya, Blender (Free Software)

  • Willingness to learn new applications in CAD area

  • Exposure to Free and Open Source software, Linux operating system

  • Prior teaching experience will be prefered.

Education or Formal Training:

  • Bachelor of Engineering / B.Architecture

  • B.Sc with formal training in CAD programmes.

Experience:

Minimum 2 Years of experience in drafting, or teaching CAD is required

Office Secretary and Administrator
Location: Bangalore, India

 

Job Profile:
IT for Change is looking for a skilled, committed and dynamic professional to join our team for the position of Office Secretary.

The job involves providing complete secretarial assistance to the Directors and the team along with all-round administrative support to all the departments, thereby strengthening the existing systems and enabling the organisation in its internal and external processes to function on par with other international non-profits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Answer incoming telephone calls, directing calls to related telephone extensions numbers.
  • Take messages of incoming calls and pass on to related staff of each department.
  • Maintain the office telephone extension list.
  • Make travel arrangements for Office staff.
  • Raise Purchase Requisitions for Bangalore Office needed purchases.
  • Update staff annual leave records for leave taken.
  • Supervise the support staff in the organisation.
  • Interact with external agencies and support services, ensure compliance with internal and external requirements relating to office administration.
  • Provide administrative support to workshops and seminars.
  • Assist each department head on major meetings arrangements or external training course.
  • Duties are not limited to the above. The office secretary and administrator shall be given added duties as required.

Who we are looking for:

The candidate should be a graduate with at least 3-5 years of relevant work experience.

Professional skills:

  • Able to communicate well in English.
  • Possess good working attitude and pleasant personality.
  • Must have good proficiency in computer skills.
  • Previous experience as a Office Administrator or a secretary experience would be an added advantage.

Teachers Educators (Science and Mathematics) for Computer Aided Learning
Location: Bangalore, India

Job requirement
ITfC is looking for teachers of Science and Mathematics to work on multiple projects to develop and train government school teachers in Karnataka in the use of ICTs and computer aided education tools. We are looking for people with a deep understanding of education perspectives and science or mathematics subject specialty. Candidates with 2 to 5 years of experience in education will be preferred. However, exceptionally talented fresh graduates could be considered. Knowledge of Kannada is essential for this position. Candidates must demonstrate interest in exploring ICTs for building networks and learning platforms. However there is no requirement of any special ICT/ computer related competencies.

Key responsibilities

  • Explore use of specific educational software tools to develop and train government school teachers and educators;
  • Participate in the conceptualization and design of the program;
  • Take responsibility for program implementation; covering workshops, school interactions, and facilitating email and virtual interactions;
  • Building linkages with existing networks , and with others working in the area of teacher education.

The place of work will be Bangalore, for a period of two year, which could be extended. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and would not be a constraint for the right candidate.

Communication Manager
Location: Bangalore, India

Job Profile:

The Communications Manager will be expected to provide support to the research, advocacy and field teams of IT for Change in developing appropriate publication and dissemination materials addressing diverse audiences and to communicate with the constituencies critical to our work. S/he will be responsible for the following:

  • Content management: Supporting the research team in writing, editing, designing and publishing for blogs, websites, periodic bulletins, reports, brochures and other publications.
  • Strategic Communications: Reaching out to and networking with institutions (such as NGOs and government departments) and press at global and local levels.
  • Programmatic Management: Taking on related programmatic tasks and responsibilities, establishing internal procedures and protocols to meet deadlines and assure an effective information flow as part of the organisation's routine and on special events such as workshops, visits and trainings.
  • Web and Social Media management: Optimising IT for Change's online presence, overseeing/creating websites and social media design and managing the content. Experience in web applications, web writing and online communities animation is desirable.
  • Knowledge creation: Researching the evolution of the organisation's work to support current research and avocacy projects, as well as supporting the research team by generating up-to-date literature reviews on specific topics.

Who we are looking for:

The candidate should be a postgraduate with interest in communication and publication activities for the development sector. S/he must possess excellent writing skills in English, be able to work collaboratively in teams and have a flair for editing.

Oral and written skills in one or more Indian languages is highly desirable.

Demonstrated experience in communicating complex issues in a cogent manner to diverse constituencies would be preferred.

Research Associate - Gender

Location: Bangalore, India

Job Profile:

IT for Change is looking for young feminist thinker-activists to join our research and advocacy team. We are in the process of building our strategic directions for the next 3 years in the area of gender, development and technology, and would like to expand our team to include young feminist researchers who have the skill to combine research, project management and advocacy. The field of gender and information society studies is evolving rapidly and impacting the development arena and women's rights and citizenship in various ways. The position offers an opportunity to be associated with an emerging field that has much potential for leadership and innovative work.

The role involves working with the Director from concept design to coordination and execution of research projects and advocacy activities. Areas of work include e-governance and women's citizenship; new media and local transformation; women's movements and techno-social architectures; knowledge and technology politics; public health and new technologies. The candidate must be able to think strategically, work independently and author outputs of very high quality. The candidate will be expected to take on programmatic responsibilities in the organisation, prepare policy briefs and communication material, undertake dissemination of research findings for influencing change, organise national and international meetings and workshops, and continuously endeavour to broaden the organisation's network of allies.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for researcher-activists with a drive for institution-building, familiar with the challenges and opportunities that NGOs in the South that straddle multiple spaces of influence from global to local offer. A commitment to team work and collaborative knowledge processes is imperative. Applicants should have an appropriate qualification in social sciences/development studies/gender studies with at least a post graduate degree and about 4 to 8 years of relevant experience in independent research and project management, and a demonstrated passion for feminist research and advocacy. The position requires a solid theoretical grounding in feminist frameworks on gender and development, and strong methodological, analytical and writing skills. Some acquaintance with ICTs for development and information society issues is preferable, but not absolutely necessary for candidates with a keen interest in learning about and building competencies in the area. Oral and written skills in one or more Indian languages is mandatory.

Depending on the background, the candidate will be considered for the positions either of research assistant or research associate.

Coordinator for a Project on ICTs for Open Government and Deepening Democracy

Location: *Mysore, India

Job Profile: The project on 'ICTs for open government and deepening democracy' seeks to use radio, video and
computer/Internet technologies to make governance processes at the village level more transparent, accountable and participatory, with a strong involvement of local CBOs and with strong interfaces with local government institutions.

The roles involves working with and reporting to the Centre Coordinator of CCID and Directors of IT for Change. The candidate should have a good experience of project reporting procedures, participatory rural appraisal and planning, project design and action research. A basic knowledge regarding computers and the Internet etc. is important, but there is no requirement for any specific expertise or advanced knowledge in this area. It is important to understand that the principal role is of a development professional and not of a technologist. However an openness to understand and eagerness to experiment with community based new development options using new technologies is required.

Who we are looking for:
The Project Coordinator should have excellent community skills, with a good grounding in participatory community development. S/he should be able to earn the trust and support of the community for implementing various innovations at the community level. It is important that the Project Coordinator be able to take independent responsibility to plan and achieve project outputs and outcomes.

Applicants will need to have at least 7 years of field project implementation experience with at least 3 years in a leadership role. Very good knowledge of Kannada, both spoken and written, is essential. S/he should be able to develop close liaison with government officials at all levels, which is essential for the success of the project.

The position requires a solid theoretical grounding in participatory and rightsbased development frameworks, strong analytical and writing skills, high quality research calibre, experience in project management and strategic communication skills for policy change in national and global spaces. While some acquaintance with ICTs for development and information society issues is preferable, it is not absolutely necessary for candidates with a keen interest in learning about and building competencies in the area of information society, governance and citizenship.
