Project Leader - Education

Location: Bengaluru, India

IT for Change, an NGO that works on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for social change at global, national and local levels, wants Mathematics, Science and Kannada teachers as Project Leaders for its innovative and pioneering education projects. Graduates with minimum 3 years of high school teaching experience, fluent in Kannada and aspiring to to improve the quality of education system may apply. We are looking for teachers keen to derive satisfaction in being associated with development work, and with an ambition to engage with the government education system to bring about systemic change in the quality of education.

In our work, we attempt to bring in the power of ICTs to address two important challenges in education; the professional development of the teacher and availability of good quality educational resources. Our work in education, with the Department of Education, Government of Karnataka, is in three areas:

(1) Working with the government to introduce new models of teacher training, integrating ICTs, in a pioneering programme called the Subject Teacher Forum. Through this programme, over the last four years, 15,000 government high school teachers have come together to form a network (the largest global professional community of teachers from a single school system) to share ideas, experiences and resources for mutual learning and development. In these email groups, more than 60,000 emails have been exchanged to support teacher learning and professional development. This is a unique project across the country, pioneering new methods and models of teacher development and teaching-learning material creation. See http://www.karnatakaeducation.org.in/KOER/en/index.php/Subject_Teacher_Forum for details.

(2) Creation of relevant and contextual educational resources collaboratively with the Karnataka Government school teachers. This resource repository called the Karnataka Open Educational Resources” (KOER) is available in English and Kannada, in which more than 400 teachers have contributed more than 7,000 content pages relating to mathematics, science, Kannada and social sciences. This is a unique and pioneering project where teachers are working together to create digital teaching learning resources in text, animation, audio and video formats, to meet their classroom and professional development needs. See http://www.karnatakaeducation.org.in/KOER/en/index.php and http://www.karnatakaeducation.org.in/KOER for details

(3) Working intensively with a block of high schools in Bangalore to demonstrate possibilities of ICT integration in the school system, through curricular and pedagogical processes and identify possibilities for systemic reforms and share these with policy makers. This is being done through a teachers' community at the block level (similar to the state-wide forum). This programme includes teacher training workshops and working in the schools with students and teachers. School-level work includes projects with students, developing materials for classes and transacting technology integrated lessons. Details of this work can be found on the schoolwiki - http://karnatakaeducation.org.in/schoolwiki/index.php/Bangalore_South3

More information on our work in education can be found in our Annual Report (see http://www.itforchange.net/ITfC_Annual_Report_2013-14/index.php/Education)

We also work teacher education institutions (DIETs) in different districts in Karnataka and the state level institutions – DSERT and RMSA on program and policy aspects and network with other NGOs and institutions working in Karnataka education. Our work has earned the appreciation of Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India (see http://karnatakaeducation.org.in/KOER/en/index.php/Subject_Teacher_Forum#Comments_on_the_Subject_Teacher_Forum_programme) and some states in India are interested to adopt similar programs in teacher education.

The ideal candidates would be teachers with a deep subject understanding, with interest in exploring new perspectives in education, and willingness to engage with new processes of teaching-learning including the use of ICTs. The candidate will be a part of the education team at IT for Change and will need to learn and work with colleagues.

Job Profile:

  4. Exploring technology integration possibilities for the subjects mentioned, including exploring the use of educational software tools

  4. General comfort in the use of computers though no specific knowledge is required
  5. Deep understanding of education and Indian social contexts
  6. Proficiency in spoken Kannada is necessary
  7. People skills and ability to work with a team are essential.

The place of work will be Bengaluru, with occasional travel across Karnataka.
