Project Leader - Education

Location: Bengaluru, India

IT for Change (www.itforchange.net), an NGO that works on the use of Information and Communication Technologies for social change at global, national and local levels, wants Mathematics, Science and Social Science teachers as project leaders for its innovative and pioneering education projects. Graduates with 2-5 years teaching experience, fluent in Kannada and aspiring to to improve the quality of education system may apply. We are looking for teachers keen to derive satisfaction and fulfilment in being associated with social and development work and a willingness to engage with the government education system to bring about systemic change.

We work with the government education system in Karnataka in the area of Teacher Professional Development, to build a network of teachers who would collaborate with one another on issues of teaching and learning. In our work, we attempt to bring in the power of ICTs to address two challenges in education – the professional development of the teacher and availability of good quality educational resources.

We also work intensively and directly with select schools in Bangalore and Yadgir, and teacher education institutions (DIETs) in different districts in Karnataka. We provide school-based support for ICT integration into teacher professional development as well as for school and classroom processes.

The ideal candidates would be teachers with a deep subject understanding, interest in exploring new perspectives in education , and willingness to engage with new processes of teaching-learning including the use of ICTs.

Job Profile:

  • Work as a part of the education team at ITfC and conduct training programmes for the government school teachers and teacher-educators

  • Development of digital curricular resources in different subject areas

  • Explore use of educational software tools

  • Contribute to building subject teacher networks within districts and across the state of Karnataka

  • Visit schools to provide school-based support

Experience and Skills:

  • Around 2 - 5 years of teaching experience in one or more of the subjects mentioned

  • Deep understanding of education and Indian social contexts

  • Keenness to explore new processes and technologies

  • Comfort in the in the use of computers though no specific application knowledge is required

  • Proficiency in Kannada – including spoken and written preferred

  • People skills and ability to work with a team are essential.

The place of work will be Bengaluru, with occasional travel across Karnataka. IT for Change (www.ITforChange.net) is looking for a dynamic, young leader, passionate about social justice and community-based work to head our field centre at Mysore called 'Prakriye' (http://www.itforchange.net/field_centre). This Centre is an exciting and cutting edge space guiding transformatory social change processes. With a strong focus on participatory methods and marginalised groups, our work has contributed to new development models on the ground through local partnerships.

It is not necessary for applicants to have worked with IT in development before, while they must have an interest in and eagerness about this area. What is more important is have experience in participatory community development work with strong focus on equity and social justice. Applicant should preferably have worked directly with grassroots communities and understand the field realities and sustainable development processes which are required to implement a new development initiative.

The position involves taking autonomous leadership of 'Prakriye', with an independent committed team of around 15. The selected candidate will be able to shape this nascent organization. which is slated to become a premier resource centre for new development processes and practices in the information age, both nationally and globally. The position will entail key responsibilities in strengthening the linkages between field-based practice and IT for Change's research and advocacy mandates.

Candidates will need to be in the age group of 30 to 40, with a versatile skill-set combining communication, training, documentation and team leadership. Excellence in written and spoken Kannada and English is mandatory. A proven track record in independent project implementation is also useful.

Community Media Associate/Assistant

Given the strong focus on marginalised groups and the use of participatory methods, our work in radio, video and telecentre based approaches has contributed to new development models on the ground, through local partnerships. The role would involve extensive use of audio, video and other digital tools for the creation of documentaries, programmes and short films, and training members of the community and community based organisation, the Centre works with.

Documentation Officer

Location: Mysore, India

IT for Change (www.itforchange.net) is looking for a Documentation Officer for its field centre at Mysore, Prakriye - Centre for Community Informatics and Development (http://www.itforchange.net/field_centre). This Centre is an exciting and cutting edge space guiding transformatory social change processes incorporating digital methods. With a strong focus on participatory methods and marginalised groups, our work in radio, video and telecentre based approaches has contributed to new development models on the ground through local partnerships.

 

The role involves documenting the activities of the centre including training programmes, field visits, interactions with community members as well as internal meetings and processes. The role would involve the preparation of reports, manuals, process documents for the Centre. Prakriye as part of its vibrant work has over time produced many short films and documentaries and keeping a track of the documentation resources created by other members of the team will also be an important responsibility. The candidate also has to coordinate the knowledge creation processes of the Field Centre and the Bengaluru office. For all this, the documentation officer has to also participate in the field activity of the Centre.

Candidates (preferably female) with a versatile skill-set combining communication, documentation and field work will be preferred. Excellence in written and spoken Kannada and English is mandatory. Prior experience in a similar profile will be preferred.

IT for Change is looking for young thinker-activists with expertise in the field of governance, education, feminist approaches,and participatory development to support our research and advocacy work. The position offers an opportunity to be associated with an emerging field that has much potential for leadership and innovative work.

The role involves working with the Directors from concept design to coordination and execution of research projects and advocacy activities. Areas of work include e-governance, new media and local transformation, techno-pedagogy, knowledge and technology politics technological architectures and socio-economic rights. The candidate must be able to think strategically, work independently and author outputs of very high quality. The candidate will be expected to take on programmatic responsibilities in the organisation, prepare policy briefs and communication material, undertake dissemination of research findings for influencing change, organise national and international meetings and workshops, and continuously endeavour to broaden the organisation's network of allies.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for researcher-activists with a drive for institution-building, familiar with the challenges and opportunities that NGOs in the South that straddle multiple spaces of influence from global to local offer. A commitment to team work and collaborative knowledge processes is imperative. Applicants should have an appropriate qualification in social sciences/development studies/gender studies and education. Designation would depend on relevant qualifications and experience in independent research and project management, requiring a strong theoretical orientation as well as analytical and writing skills. Some acquaintance with ICTs for development and information society issues is preferable, but not absolutely necessary for candidates, however, a keen interest in learning about and building competencies in the area is required. Oral and written skills in one or more Indian languages is mandatory.

Research Assistant/ Associate - Internet governance

Location – Bengaluru, India

Technical Associate

Location: Yadgir, Karnataka

IT for Change, an NGO that works on the use of Information and Communication Technologies for social change at global, national and local levels, has a vacancy for the role of “Technical Associate”. We are looking for individuals willing to commit their technical skills to the process of social change and keen to work in the development sector. The candidate should be able to adjust to the special circumstances of NGO work, and derive satisfaction and fulfilment in being associated with social and development work.

We work with the public education system in Karnataka where our work focuses on Teacher Professional Development and building a network of teachers who would collaborate with one another on issues of teaching and learning. A new project is being initiated in Yadgir block, Karnataka as a part of the Kalike Samrudhi Upakrama program, supported by the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which will aim to improve the teaching learning processes through the integration of ICTs into the education system. To support our work with high schools in Yadgir, we are looking for a technical associate who would provide the technical support for the schools and teachers we work with.

Job Profile:

  • Software installation, configuration, maintenance, upgrade and support in schools;

  • Network maintenance and support;

  • Hardware maintenance and support;

  • Provide preventitive and breakdown suppport through on-site visits as well as through email and telephone;

  • Provide training on software and hardware to teachers;

  • Travel across Yadgir schools to help maintain the technology infrastructure in schools.

Experience and Skills:

  • 2-3 years in similar job providing support;

  • Willingness to work in the development sector;

  • Good knowledge of computer operating systems and commonly used applications;

  • Fluency in Kannada – reading and writing. Reasonable fluency in speaking English and Hindi and good communication skills;

  • Willingness to learn new technologies and tools, especially Free and Open Source Software;

Education or Formal Training:

Project Associate - IT
Location: Bengaluru, India

IT for Change is looking for individuals who are willing to commit their technical skills to the process of social change and keen to work in the development sector. The candidate should be able to adjust to the special circumstances of NGO work, and derive satisfaction and fulfilment in being associated with social and development work.

 

Candidate will be required to support the work of the organization by providing in-house technical support as well as provide application implementation and support for our project partners. The position will assume overall responsibility for technology support and management. ITfC combines a challenging, dynamic work environment and excellent professional development opportunities.

 

Job Profile:

  • Manage a small team of Technology Support specialists and serve as coach and mentor;

  • Manage and troubleshoot in areas of IT infrastructure and network (GNU/Linux LAN);

  • Research, implement or modify internal systems as necessary to meet quality work environment;

  • Track, monitor and maintain technical requirements and resources, including procurement of new systems, hardware and software;

  • Recommend and implement processes to ensure consistent usage and security of IT systems;

  • Oversee IT Support for workshops, and for other public organizations that ITfC works with;

  • Explore new developments in Free Software and experiment with adopting different free software applications within the organisation and at partner's locations in existing and new areas.

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 3 years of work covering information systems and support experience required;

  • In-depth knowledge of computer operating systems and commonly used applications;

  • Willingness to learn new technologies and tools;

  • Ability to interact with cross-functional teams;

  • Problem solving skills and experience;

  • Ability to trouble shoot an issue in an effective manner.

Education or Formal Training:

  • Bachelor of Engineering or Science in Computer Science or related field.

  • Exposure to GNU/Linux operating system preferred.

  • Willingness to work in the development sector.

Communication Manager
Location: Bengaluru, India

Job Profile:

The Communications Manager will be expected to provide support to the research, advocacy and field teams of IT for Change in developing appropriate publication and dissemination materials addressing diverse audiences and to communicate with the constituencies critical to our work. S/he will be responsible for the following:

  • Content management: Supporting the research team in writing, editing, designing and publishing for blogs, websites, periodic bulletins, reports, brochures and other publications.

  • Strategic Communications: Reaching out to and networking with institutions (such as NGOs and government departments) and press at global and local levels.

  • Programmatic Management: Taking on related programmatic tasks and responsibilities, establishing internal procedures and protocols to meet deadlines and assure an effective information flow as part of the organisation's routine and on special events such as workshops, visits and trainings.

  • Web and Social Media management: Optimising IT for Change's online presence, overseeing/creating websites and social media design and managing the content. Experience in web applications, web writing and online communities animation is desirable.

  • Knowledge creation: Researching the evolution of the organisation's work to support current research and avocacy projects, as well as supporting the research team by generating up-to-date literature reviews on specific topics.

Who we are looking for:

The candidate should be a postgraduate with interest in communication and publication activities for the development sector. S/he must possess excellent writing skills in English, be able to work collaboratively in teams and have a flair for editing.

Oral and written skills in one or more Indian languages is highly desirable.

Demonstrated experience in communicating complex issues in a cogent manner to diverse constituencies would be preferred.

Decisions about suitability for the positions and about remuneration depend on appropriate experience and skills. Excellent writing skills and the ability for collaborative team work are prerequisites.
